Les Eyzies
and the surrounding region
Les Eyzies, a small village in Périgord Noir, is nestled along the banks
of the river Vézère, a tributary of the Dordogne. In and around the
village are numerous prehistoric caves, some of which have wallpaintings
that are a must see. You will also find the interesting Musée National
de la Préhistoire (National Prehistorical Museum) located in a 13-th
century fortress built into a rock. Les Eyzies is also home to some
restaurants that suit a variety of tastes and pocketbooks. You will
also find shops and a Monday market where you can purchase the fixings
for your own gourmet menu.If you miss the market on Monday in les Eyzies,
don't worry becauseyou'll find markets in surrounding villages on different
days of the week where you can buy regional produce. However, the area
has more to offer than fresh produce from local markets. You can explore
its
vast woods on foot, rent a bike and
meander through the quaint villages, admiring the farmhouses built inPérigord
style, enjoy an afternoon of horseback riding,or float down the Vézère
in a rented canoe. If golf is your game, you'll find both 9-hole and
18-hole courses. When you are exercised-out, you can hop in your car
and discover the more than 1200 castles in the region, including Des
Milandes, made famous by the American songstress Josephine Baker. During
the summer, several cultural festivals are held such as in the medieval
village of Sarlat.
